MTA President’s Message

Dear Mathematics Teachers,

Greetings and best wishes on the occasion of the annual Teachers’ Day, from the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (MTA), and me personally as its President.

MTA was founded at a meeting of the founding members held on 20 March 2018 at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai, and is registered with the Registrar of Societies, on 23 April 2018. The objective of MTA is to bring together teachers, educators and mathematicians in a joint endeavor, to sow the seeds for a long and sustained engagement with the complex task of improving mathematics education, fulfilling a long felt need for such an organization of Mathematics Teachers across the country.  The Association aims to serve as an instrument to improve the standards of mathematics at various levels, generate interest in mathematics among students through various activities, nurture mathematical talent etc. Towards these objectives the Association plans to undertake various activities including development and adoption of learning materials and teaching strategies, publication of material related to mathematics teaching – including in particular a Newsletter, holding conferences, workshops, orientation programs etc, to name a few. MTA will also coordinate with other national and international bodies with similar objectives.

A website has been created, with URL http://mtai.org.in, and while currently you may find it only in a preliminary state, efforts are underway to develop it into an effective interface for the activities of MTA.

On this Teachers’ Day we are initiating a drive for membership of the Association, so as to bring about active participation of the wide community of mathematics teachers and mathematics enthusiasts. As a special measure a concessional Life membership is being offered to teachers from schools and colleges, at a membership fee of Rs. 2000 (regular Life membership fee is Rs. 3000). You are encouraged to join the endeavor, so that together we can build a movement for raising the mathematical standards in the country.

The Life members of MTA will enjoy the following benefits in particular:

i) Access to online study material that MTA plans to generate, and concessional rates for hard copy material produced.
ii) Facilitation in organizing training activities in terms of human resources, assisting with equipment, etc.
iii) Concessional rates for participation in conferences, especially the annual conferences organized by MTA.
iv) Assistance in networking with a wide range of people involved in mathematics, including research mathematicians, college professors, textbook writers, and others.

Wishing you once again a very happy Teachers’ Day and looking forward to your joining us. For further information please visit the website mentioned above. The membership application form may also be downloaded from the website.  You are also welcome to contact us by emailing to mta.india18@gmail.com for queries or suggestions.
