Theme: Mathematics Education in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India) announces its Second Annual Conference (2020) on September 5 and 6, 2020. The conference will be held online and will focus on the theme of “Mathematics Education in Times of the Covid-19 Pandemic”.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought before us unprecedented challenges. Education is especially disrupted due to the various lockdown and distancing measures in place. Many teachers and students across the country are struggling to cope with the challenges while keeping teaching and learning alive. The Conference will feature a discussion forum where mathematics teachers will voice the challenges, efforts, and innovations they undertook to achieve successful teaching. It will also include two workshops (in parallel, aimed at school and college teachers respectively) on Digital technology and online resources: A means to support mathematics learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We have two excellent keynote talks lined up for the conference.
The first talk is by Neena Gupta of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, a young mathematician with outstanding research achievements. She is the youngest person in Mathematical Sciences to receive the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the country for research in Science, that honours scientists for significant and cumulative contributions to their area of research.
The second talk is by Po Shen Loh of Carnegie Mellon University, USA. He is the Coach for the USA Mathematics Olympiad team and is known for his books on olympiad problem solving. Po-Shen Loh remarkably believes that anything is possible, even reinventing learning. He founded Expii, an innovative learning platform where students have the power to choose how they learn. Expii is a social enterprise that provides free creative and novel lessons to the world to make education and intellectual curiosity accessible to all.
The Government of India has just announced the National Education Policy 2020. The NEP addresses institutional structures, pedagogy, curricula, teacher training and technology, and has the potential for a profound impact on the state of education in India. A panel discussion will be organized focusing on its implications for mathematics education both in school and higher education. The discussion will also address how MTA as a professional teachers’ organization could respond as the policy rolls out.
We are also happy to announce a cultural programme by conference participants at the conclusion of the conference. The detailed programme is given below. (Click on each event to see more details, which will be updated from time to time.)
The MTA (I) works towards improving the teaching and learning of mathematics and related areas at all levels – both inside and outside the formal educational system, in the whole of India. It also seeks to generate interest in mathematics among students through various activities and nurture mathematical talent. The Association extends a warm invitation to all mathematics teachers to participate in its second annual (online) conference, to join MTA(I) and strengthen this effort.
Note: We will try and accommodate as many participants as possible on the Zoom Meeting link. In case the registration exceeds the limit set, we will give preference to MTA members. However, live streaming will be available to all those who register.
