MTA Regional Conference Goa 2024

The MTA conferences aim to provide a forum for mathematics teachers, mathematics educators, mathematicians and individuals interested in mathematics education to come together and deliberate on various aspects of mathematics education. Four MTA annual conferences (including three online conferences) have been held so far since 2019. This will the first regional conference of MTA.

The MTA Regional Conference, Goa, 2024 will be held on January 27 (Sat) and 28 (Sun) 2024 at the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Porvorim, Goa. The conference will include discussions on curricular as well as pedagogical aspects of mathematics teaching and learning at the school, college and university levels. Mathematics teachers and educators from Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat with an interest in discussing challenges of mathematics education and possible solutions are invited to participate in the conference. (MTA is planning to hold conferences in other regions as well.)

Note: This is an onsite and not an online conference.

The conference will address the following themes:

Theme 1: NEP and curricular changes in mathematics at the school and higher education levels

Theme 2: Innovative practices in education

Theme 3: Making mathematics accessible to every student – regional challenges

The conference sessions will include keynote talks, panel discussion, paper and poster presentations, and workshops. It is also planned to hold an informal social gathering and conference dinner.

KEYNOTE TALKS

Vivek Monteiro, Navnirmiti Foundation. Topic: Problems and prospects of universalising elementary mathematics education of good quality

Madhavan Mukund, Chennai Mathematical Institute. Title: Teaching computational thinking through (small) datasets

WORKSHOPS (in parallel)

Workshop 1 (Aaloka Kanhere & Pooja Lokhande, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR): Creating a Mathematics Laboratory in Your School

Workshop 2 (Jonaki Ghosh, Lady Shri Ram College): Technology-based mathematical explorations at the senior secondary and UG level (participants need to bring a laptop to attend this session)

PANEL DISCUSSION

Topic: NEP and the Mathematics Curriculum.

Panelists:

  • R Ramanujam a retired Professor from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai and a visiting faculty member at the School of Arts and Sciences, Azim Premji University.
  • Madhavan Mukund, Director Chennai Mathematical Institute, Chennai and currently NCERT chair of school maths curriculum for classes 6-12
  • S. U. Kamat, Retired math college professor who taught Math at various colleges in Goa for five decades
  • Siddharaj Mopkar, an NIT Calicut Engg. Graduate and Teach for India Fellow has been training school children for foundational courses in mathematics and science out of a passion for teaching.
  • Ulpa Waingankar, Assistant Professor Mathematics, Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna Goa

Moderator: Venkatesh Kamat, Retired Professor of Computer Science at Goa University and currently a visiting professor at IIT Goa

PAPER PRESENTATION

A part of the conference will be devoted to papers presented by mathematics teachers and educators reporting on their classroom experiments and experiences, on difficult topics in the mathematics curriculum, on mathematics assessment, on the use of technology, on mathematics competitions, and so on. Although discussions on all aspects of mathematics teachers’ professional lives are welcome, participants are encouraged to relate their presentation to one of the themes listed above.

The conference will be multilingual and presenters may present in the following languages: Konkani, Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi, and English.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

A part of the conference will be devoted to poster presentations by mathematics teachers and educators reporting on their classroom experiments and experiences on difficult topics in the mathematics curriculum, mathematics assessment, the use of technology, mathematics competitions, and so on.

Since the number of participants in the conference is limited, preference will be given to those whose abstracts are accepted for presentation and to MTA(I) members. Registration fee:

  • Without accommodation: Rs 1200 per participant (Reduced for MTA members to Rs 500).
  • With accommodation (for two nights): Rs 2200 per participant (Reduced for MTA members to Rs 1500). Note: Only limited sharing type accommodation available.
  • With accommodation (for one night only): Rs 1700 per participant (Reduced for MTA members to Rs 1000). Note: Only limited sharing type accommodation available.

Registration fee includes participation in all sessions, conference materials and conference meals and tea. Only limited sharing type accommodation will be available. Preference will be given to presenting participants of Western region and MTA members. Limited travel support may be offered to selected participants.
